AFKA Scotland welcomes the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) now being part of Scots law, which ensures children’s rights are legally enforceable in Scotland. Over the past year we have been working to ensure our members and the workforce across Scotland, understand what they need to do to ensure children’s right are at the forefront of their practice. Last month, our Legal Consultant, Rhona Pollock, held a lunch and learn session on the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024 and will hold two legal surgeries for Consortia members in September (19th – NEC and 23rd – WOSC) to answer any further questions on how workers can meaningfully embed this new legislation into their practice.
Beyond this, we are excited to announce our annual Legal Conference – Children’s Rights: Our Responsibilities – will be held on Friday 1st November in Dundee. Together, our speakers will discuss the implications of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024; Children (Care and Justice) Act 2024; Children (Scotland) Act 2020 and the Promise recommendations and how children’s rights can be actualised in practice.
